A donation to Give a Dog a Bone will help tackle loneliness and social isolation for older adults.

With two distinct projects, your donation can help sustain the important work that we do at Give a Dog a Bone.

We are proud that our unique and award-winning concept is making a huge difference to both older adults and rescue animals alike.

Your donation can help:

  • Support an over 60s person to afford a rescue pet companion. It’s a WIN/WIN – the person gets a friend and the animal gets a home
  • Support our Companionship in the Community project, providing a safe space for older adults to make new friends, learn new skills and mix with dogs

Project 1 – Financial support

Pets are constant companions who can bring welcome relief from the adverse effects of loneliness in our ageing years. They can provide their owners with motivation to rise in the morning, and with the feeling of being needed.

Where finances would otherwise be a barrier to having, or keeping a pet, for a person aged 60 or over, our Financial Support offering is UK wide and includes two types of support:

Rehoming Fee support

We contribute up to £225 towards the cost of rehoming a rescue companion animal from a legitimate rescue organisation for people over 60.

Monthly Support

We make a monthly contribution to people over 60 to help with the ongoing costs of pet insurance or pet food for their companion animal. By becoming a sponsor your support will prevent a person over 60 from handing their beloved companion animal into a shelter. Our current Monthly Support offering costs us £1650 per month and this number is ever increasing.

People can apply for either, or both types of financial support outlined above.

Here are some of the costs associated with our Financial Support offering:

DonatingGives a person over 60
£20.00The ability to feed their cat companion for a whole month
£30.00The ability to feed their canine companion for a whole month
£225.00The ultimate gift of friendship and love by allowing an older adult to afford the rehoming fee of a rescue pet companion
£360.00The ability to care for their pet companion for up to one whole year (covering monthly fees like food and pet insurance)
£540.00The ability to care for more than one pet companion, so they don't have to part with any of their beloved animals

Every time we commit to supporting with the cost of pet insurance or pet food, we commit to thousands of pounds over the lifetime of the animal.

Project 2 – Companionship in the Community

We understand that, for whatever reason, not everyone wants or can have a companion animal.

Our Companionship in the Community project is comprised of three Community Spaces in Central Scotland. Anyone can visit for a hot drink, a biscuit, a chat, and to spend some time with our Companionship dogs, and people over 60 can take part in a variety of activity and treatment sessions.

We also have a Pet Food Bank available at each of our Community Spaces, where anyone who needs it can access free pet food.

Here are some of the costs associated with our Companionship in the Community offering:

DonatingProvides
£3.00Hot drinks and biscuits for a visitor at a table in our Community Space
£5.00A pack of wet cat or dog food for our Pet Food Bank
£8.00A bag of dry cat or dog food for our Pet Food Bank
£10.00Access to one of our Zoom activities, for a person over 60, for a whole month
£15.00The gift of a therapy treatment for a person over 60
£22.00Access to one of our in person group activities, for a person over 60, for a whole month
£1000.00A Community Space where people are reconnected to society by covering rent of one of our spaces for a month

Many of the individuals that your sponsorship will support live alone and their pet, for those who have one, is their main source of company and affection.

Jean and Willow

Woman sitting in garden holsing small black and white puppy.

Jean is one of our many beneficiaries of Rehoming Ree Support.

As a result of this she was able to adopt the lovely Willow, a Romanian rescue puppy! Willow was found as one of 6 pups in a box in a field with no mum in sight. She had to spend weeks in a shelter before making the long journey from Romania in a van, at just 4 months old. She then spent a week in respite care before Jean could go meet her and bring her home.

Jean has worked hard to support and train Willow, exposing her to different experiences and getting her used to all the new things around her. She has coped well and is now Jean tell us she is sociable to the point of being a bit of a diva!

“It’s lovely to see her so happy and loving life and this has all been made possible by GADAB and the wonderful work they do.”

Ken and Broxi

Man standing on pavement, holding red dog lead with light sand coloured dog.

Ken contacted Give a Dog a Bone as he was looking to adopt a dog for companionship. Through our Rehoming and Monthly Support scheme Ken was able to rehome the lovely Broxi and they now spend their days together.

Ken tells us that at first Broxi was nervous and wary of new people and surroundings. Thanks to Ken’s dedication to caring for Broxi, he is content and happy in his new home getting lots of treats and walks! Ken tells us Broxi is his true friend.

“My life has changed drastically since getting my dog. His name is “Broxi” I now have a very dear friend and a loyal dog. I have a purpose in life, he has given me a purpose in life.”

Kelly

Man, smiling, sitting at table, facing camera

Kelly is a regular visitior and activity participant at our Community Space in Alloa and on our online, Zoom sessions.

Kelly has enjoyed, many of our free for over 60s activity and therapy sessions, both online and in our Community Space, including Spanish lessons, chair yoga, reflexology and art classes. Kelly loves dogs but doesn’t have one of his own, so he comes to the community space regularly to spend time with our companionship dogs.

“The dogs here are very friendly and we make a fuss of them and get to know them all. They’re very soothing and you can sit and pet them – they love it and we love it.”

I love seeing him run around and enjoying life. Above all, he is great company as I live on my own. We are each other’s comfort blanket and I feel safe knowing he is around.
